4 Interview Questions You Should Be Able to Answer as a Manufacturing Engineer

Your interview for a manufacturing engineer role requires preparation. You will be asked questions to assess your technical skills, business sense, and operational knowledge of manufacturing processes.

As a result, you should practice answering potential interview questions. This increases your odds of advancing in the hiring process.

Answering the following interview questions can help you land your next manufacturing engineer position.


1. What is a BOM and how does it relate to manufacturing?

The interviewer is evaluating your expertise as a manufacturing engineer. Include examples of your experience overseeing a bill of materials (BOM).

For instance, “A BOM is the bill of materials for an organization’s manufacturing process. The BOM may include a master list of the components required to manufacture products.

In a previous position, I managed the design, development, and fabrication process for the organization’s products. The BOM consisted of the suppliers we used to support operations and the tools and resources used for manufacturing.”

2. Have you worked with Kanban in previous positions?

The interviewer is looking for insight into how you perform your work. If you have not used Kanban, talk about the applications you use to complete similar tasks.

For instance, “I used Kanban in my last role to schedule the production process. This included what to produce, how much to produce, and when to produce the product.

I also used Kanban’s tracking functions to monitor the organization’s manufacturing components, equipment, and supplies. Because I knew what each operational project required and when it was needed, I supported efficiency in operations.”

3. Can you describe the main differences between just-in-time and lean manufacturing processes?

The interviewer is interested in your working knowledge and experience in programming structures. Highlight your expertise using engineering methodologies.

For instance, “Just-in-time is a methodology created to ensure parts or components arrive at a facility when they need to be used. This lowers inventory expenses and waste from extra or damaged parts.

Lean manufacturing extends this concept to include the customer perspective. It ensures that every step in production provides value that meets customers’ needs.”

4. Which factors do you believe can impact your design when developing a more efficient production process?

The interviewer wants to gauge your critical-thinking skills for each area of a project. Demonstrate your ability to anticipate and resolve potential issues.

For instance, “There typically are multiple factors that may affect the manufacturing process. One is how well-managed and organized the inventory and supply system is. This helps operations run smoothly. Another is the equipment and the programs running the equipment on the factory floor.

In my last role, I regularly found methods to increase efficiency for each component of the manufacturing equipment the organization maintained. I also oversaw the factory’s overhead to keep production within budget.”
